What human capacities must we deliberately cultivate precisely because AI can now handle everything else?
AI in education is not an add-on. It's a reckoning.
Most schools are responding to AI by adding technology to existing pedagogy - AI literacy courses, coding workshops, tool training. But integrating AI into education requires something more fundamental: a framework for developing the human capacities that AI amplifies.
A student who brings curiosity and critical thinking to AI gets a powerful research partner. A student who brings dependency gets faster homework completion and slower cognitive development. This is measured, not feared: when a thousand teenagers practiced math with a chatbot that handed over the answers, their scores jumped, and then they did worse on a test without it than classmates who never touched AI - and the very same model, redesigned to withhold the answer and coach instead, erased almost all of the harm. What the student brings, and how the tool is built, together decide the outcome.
WILD Intelligence - Wisdom, Intention, Leadership, Discovery - is the framework for developing what matters on the human side. It answers the question that AI tools alone cannot: not how to use AI, but how to remain capable, creative, and self-directed while using it.
What WILD Intelligence develops in students.
Can they see what's true beneath the surface?
WisdomWhen AI generates polished content that may be wrong, can the student evaluate substance independently of surface? Can they discern what's real in a world of unlimited generated text?
Can they choose what matters?
IntentionWhen AI presents infinite options and optimized suggestions, can the student maintain their own direction? Can they choose based on values, not just efficiency?
Can they create movement in others?
LeadershipWhen AI can execute any task, can the student direct that power toward what matters? Can they lead people and tools toward outcomes that require human judgment?
Can they learn faster than the terrain shifts?
DiscoveryWhen the ground shifts continuously, can the student adapt? Can they experiment, fail, learn, and evolve faster than any curriculum can update?
In education, this is a methodology, not a product.
